This one is specifically for UK readers.
I don’t post to news comments sites as a rule, simply because reading them is far more entertaining. But recently I felt compelled to put finger to keyboard and join in The Guardian debate on benefits. Why? Basically, because the benefits argument is actually an important issue. Not the benefits cap as such, but the wider reaching implications of the fundamental causes behind it.
Commenteers; have you lot actually stepped back and looked at your comments? You are arguing amongst yourselves over petty inconsistencies and grasp of the finer points, while the subject you are attempting to debate is lost in the mire of uninformed chatter. Some of you are actually insulting each other!
This is what your government wants. You can not be a force for change while you are mired in your own self-righteous indignation. Allowing commentary on news reporting is admirable; the comments which are actually written are not.
Most of you are simply attempting to display your overblown opinion of your own intelligence; you are hoping against hope that other people will respond to you saying ‘Oh, jolly good point; very insightful that person. You know, you are absolutely right, wish I’d thought of that’.
It is disgusting.
You bleat on about laws and rights as if you have any concept of what they actually mean. Your opinion on which Government is the better (or worse) choice indicates the fact that you have yet to realise that NO government can possibly be a right choice under our interpretation of the democratic system. And I say ‘our interpretation’ because there are multiple forms of Democracy and democratic rule. Did you know this? Did you think our way is only way? Or even the right way?
The issue you are trying – badly – to debate here is nothing new. Subjugation of the lower classes by means of option reduction is the oldest trick in the book. It has been going on ever since the first tribal leader assumed their role. Massive taxation has been the tool of choice for ‘Royalty’ down the ages, but many other means have been invented and adopted. It all adds up to removing the ability of people to interact with each other by keeping them scared and focussed on their own survival. Removal of human social interaction – and therefore by definition, ability to organise and rebel – by curfew, martial law, sectarianism and many other nasty little concepts is both as old as the human race itself and therefore, tired and cliché.
You should know this. You should also be aware that nothing you propose will ever come to fruition. We have a system whereby every four years an opposition government has the chance to be elected in place of the current one. Think about this. The opposing party will make their case for election on the basis that the current controlling party is incapable, or unable to ‘correctly’ govern the country. They will make opposing policies, they will formulate opposing plans. Do you actually believe then that, once elected, they will change their minds and say ‘You know, actually the other lot were bloody good really’? Of course they won’t.
In base terms this means that every four years the goalposts can be moved. Policies which may have benefitted you in the last government will be abolished or re-hashed under the new one. They have to because they told you the previous lot had no idea. Understand this simple principle and you will see that elected short-term government is what is killing the western form of civilisation; and by default, the rest of the world. There is too much change. Four years is in no way enough time for any government to undo any damaging policies left over.
You talk about basic human rights. Who decided these rights? Who decided that every person must have the same rights as everybody else, whether they actually deserve them or not? Did you? No, you didn’t, but you agree with them because you can. You don’t stop to think if they mean anything, or are in any way relevant to the issues we face today.
Let me give an example: I note comments about children and the ‘basic human right’ to have as many children as we want. About how nasty, evil countries like China forbid this. For your information, China does not forbid this; if you can afford to pay for more children, you can have them. Did you know that? No, obviously you didn’t but you accept the statement that they do control everybody because you can’t be bothered to check. On the subject though, why is population control such a damn difficult subject to debate? It is common sense. The math is as complicated as Spot and his Red Ball. People = Resource, more People = more Resource. Simple isn’t it? Why can you not see this? The population of the world has exploded in recent years because of the other ‘basic human right’ which is to be allowed to live, whatever the circumstances. Any life is better than no life; correct?
Medicine has advanced to the stage where life expectancy is greatly extended for the majority of people living in a modern culture. Many more people than ever before survive life threatening illnesses, diseases and injuries. More children survive childbirth; more females become pregnant and also survive childbirth. More third-world inhabitants are supported and saved from harsh, often deadly living conditions. All of this means more and more pressure on resource. More requirements for manufacture and production; which also eats up resource. All of THIS, we require from a planet where resource itself is becoming ever scarcer. It cannot go on forever. You want to have lots of kids? Fine, but do you really want them to be born into a world like this? Do you REALLY believe it will be better for them?
Do you believe in rights for murderers? Rapists? Child molesters? Brainless, thugs who intimidate and hurt? Corrupt Police who are supposed to be servants of the public and yet abuse them? Politicians who by their actions cause thousands to suffer and die? Company Shareholders and Directors who by their greed ruin and destroy the lives of hard-working people? Do all these people deserve ‘basic human rights’? Paid for and supported by you? You are told to believe that they do…but do you really?
Wake up and smell the bullshit. Nothing is new, nothing is different, but at least now you can sit behind your keyboards tappity-tapping your illogical, ill-conceived and emotional response to the latest outrage. Happy? The benefits argument is just another way to take your eyes off the real issues. Divide and conquer does not come into it. Outrage and confuse is the order of the day. You will eventually conquer yourselves.
You should be ashamed of yourselves.
